Depression affects many people everyday, and can be debilitating, to the point where it can bring on poor physical health, contribute to unemployment, ruin relationships, and destroy lives.
There are many things you can do to ease depression, and in some cases, actually eliminate depression.
One effective thing you can do that not only helps with depression, but also will improve your physical health, is to exercise. Find something you enjoy doing, such as walking, or yoga, and make it a habit. By keeping up with exercise, you will soon find you feel better physically, and that your thinking will change from negativity and pessimism to more positive and uplifting thoughts. Exercise can also increase your sense of self esteem, help you to get a better night’s sleep, and also helps to get rid of stress and anxiety.
Another simple step, be careful not to put too many demands on yourself. Keep things simple, do things you enjoy, get outside, get some fresh air, and talk with a doctor, counselor, or someone you trust.
A healthy diet can also help with symptoms of depression. When your diet is poor in nutrition, it will have a negative effect on your brain chemistry, and your mood and behavior. Stay away from obvious junk food, food additives, artifical sweeteners, and check into a gluten free diet; gluten intolerance can definitely have an effect on mood.
Also try taking up a new hobby, or making changes in your life, such as redecorating your living space; clear out anything that provokes sad memories or regrets, or triggers your depression in any way. Choose cheerful colors and designs. Use incense and fragrances, as well as living plants. Also, engage in an outside activity, such as gardening.
Keep in mind, you are not alone. If you find that you need additional help, don’t be afraid to see help from a counselor. He or she may be able to give you speical advice and guidance. Most importantly, stay away from negative people, and surround yourself with positive people.
